Giant pulses in Millisecond Pulsars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Giant pulses (GPs), occasional individual pulses with an intensity 100 times the average intensity, have been detected in four pulsars todate. Their origin is not well understood, but studies suggest a connection between the strength of magnetic field at the light cylinder Blc and the existence of GPs. Here, we report on detection of significant Large Amplitude Pulses (LAPs) in two more pulsars with high values of Blc, PSRs J0218+4232 and B1957+20, observed using Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT).

A Search for Giant Pulses from Millisecond Pulsars
We have searched for microsecond-timescale broadband emission from a sample of eighteen millisecond pulsars. Our study places strong limits on such emission from several millisecond pulsars and shows that it is only present in a small subset of millisecond pulsars. Giant pulses of up to 64 times the mean pulse energy were detected from PSR J1823−3021A in the globular cluster NGC 6624. In contra...

We have carried out a survey for ‘giant pulses’ in 5 millisecond pulsars. We detect individual pulses from the high Ė pulsar PSR B1821−24 with energies exceeding 50× the mean pulse energy. These giant pulses are concentrated in a narrow phase window coincident with the power-law non-thermal pulse seen in hard X-rays. This is the third example of the giant pulse phenomenon. It supports the idea ...
متن کاملGreen Bank Telescope Studies of Giant Pulses from Millisecond Pulsars
We have conducted a search for giant pulses from four millisecond pulsars using the 100m Green Bank Telescope. Coherently dedispersed time-series from PSR J0218+4232 were found to contain giant pulses of very short intrinsic duration whose energies follow power-law statistics. The giant pulses are in phase with the two minima of the radio integrated pulse profile but are phase aligned with the ...
متن کاملMultifrequency Observations of Giant Radio Pulses from the Millisecond Pulsar B1937+21
Giant pulses are short, intense outbursts of radio emission with a power-law intensity distribution that have been observed from the Crab Pulsar and PSRB1937+21. We have undertaken a systematic study of giant pulses from PSRB1937+21 using the Arecibo telescope at 430, 1420, and 2380 MHz. At 430 MHz, interstellar scattering broadens giant pulses to durations of ∼ 50 μsecs, but at higher frequenc...
متن کاملHighest Brightness Temperature Observed in the Universe
Giant radio pulses of the millisecond pulsar B1937+21 were recorded with the S2 VLBI system at 1.65 GHz with NASA/JPL’s 70-m radio telescope at Tidbinbilla, Australia. These pulses have been observed as strong as 65 000 Jy with widths ≤ 15 ns, corresponding to a brightness temperature Tb ≥ 5 · 10 39 K, the highest observed in the universe. The vast majority of these pulses occur in a 5.8 μs and...
